Government should give doctors incentives that are commensurate with their work, experts have said.

Human resources experts say both parties should find common ground during salary negotiations.

Industrial Psychology Consultants managing consultant Mr Memory Nguwi said, “The first port of call is for Government to engage the doctors. It’s not fair for doctors to be treated as civil servants considering the kind of job that they do.

“But in the event that Government can’t afford the doctors’ proposed salary package, then they must introduce an incentive scheme based on performance. At least in that way, the doctors will be motivated to do their job.

“The Health Services Board is the one which is able to address the doctors’ concerns. That could be an option, but that now depends on the expertise of the people who sit on the board because we run the risk of repeating the same mistake over and over again.”

Mrs Petronella Goto of Expert Human Resources said, “Whatever instruments Government uses to restore the situation, there has to be common ground.”
