WARRIORS’ kingpin Costa Nhamoinesu has billed the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Malawi as his biggest game in national team colours.
Zimbabwe need to beat The Flames to solidify their chances of making it to the Afcon finals for the first time since 2006, and the 30-year-old defender is promising fireworks.
Nhamoinesu has been impressive in all the three Afcon games he has featured for the Zimbabwe men’s national soccer side this campaign.
“The game against Malawi will be bigger than all those I have played for Zimbabwe; it is a game that will put us in a very good position in our Afcon journey.“We need to put in maximum effort and die a little, like what keepers’ trainer Richard Tswatswa would want to say. We need to produce a positive result for the millions of Zimbabweans,” he said. The dreadlocked star had a season to remember for Czech Republic giants Sparta Prague, who reached the Europa League quarterfinals before losing to Spanish side Villarreal.
Those remarkable Thursday European nights have put Nhamoinesu on the radar of a number of clubs, especially from Turkey, while a swansong move to South African glamour club Kaizer Chiefs has been touted.
However, Nhamoinesu – whose three-year contract with Sparta Prague expires next month – has however ruled out a move to Absa Premiership.“I have possibilities too outside the Czech Republic, including South Africa, but it looks like I will not be going there,” he said. “I still have a chance to play in Europe, in countries like Turkey where the competition is high.“It will be good to be close to home and play with my fellow brothers but I feel I can still fight for my position up here.”Turkish side Besiktas, who are set to clinch the Turkey Super Lig title this evening, third-placed Konyaspor and Kasimapasa are some of the clubs interested in sounding out Nhamoinesu’s agent Jakob Slowik.
Slowik, who will travel to Zimbabwe to watch the Warriors in action against Malawi, reckons he will find some unpolished diamonds in Zimbabwe.
“That should be a good business visit I am sure. Costa’s profile has been growing here in Europe and the thinking is there could be a lot of good players there in Zimbabwe so I will be coming over to see what is on offer,” he said.
