Prospective parents would ask why they should choose George Emmanuel College High School?

Academic success is incredibly important to us at George Emmanuel College High School.  We do not measure success through extra curriculum activities alone but we put as much emphasis on what our pupils become and what they achieve.

CUTTING EDGE APPROACH

Our approach is unique, that makes us second to none in everything we do:-

We use a psychological approach in identifying individual weaknesses.

Our programs are tailor made to suit individual needs, identify areas of weakness and provide special remedial action.

Our teacher pupil ratio is minimal, though we believe its not always a solution, but identifying the areas of strength and weaknesses and correcting those that are causing poor results.

The rapport, encouragement and support available to every single student creates an atmosphere where they can develop happily and progress successfully.

OUR PHILOSOPHY

Our philosophy here at George Emmanuel College High is very simple:-

We believe all normal students make it if the right approach and pace is used, i.e. learning is like a relay, it requires more than one person to win the race and if you handover the stick with the wrong hand it is bound to fall.  At George Emmanuel College we celebrate each child for who they are, and guide them accordingly.

LEARNING RESOURCES

We offer CAMBRIDGE and ZIMSEC.

We produce study literature that is in line with the syllabus requirements for CAMBRIDGE and ZIMSEC.  We use both direct and E-Learning for our study material.

Subjects :- We take all subjects including French and Food Science.

STAFF MEMBERS

We have highly qualified, motivated teachers.  The majority of our teachers are examiners, and they use their expertise to coach, teach and guide students on exam tips, approach and techniques.

Teachers get bonuses and incentives for every ‘A’ Grade obtained by every student on public examinations.

We offer an attractive and well-resourced environment in which to learn and play.  We believe school can be enjoyed with classic facilities.

When it comes to food we provide the best meals, five times daily.  Our students do not bring groceries (tuck), but only blankets and toiletries. In-between snacks and eats are provided timely.

Sporting activities offered include:  athletics, soccer, netball, volleyball, tennis, swimming, rugby, basketball and cricket.

George Emmanuel College is the only school that offers the services of a resident psychologist.  Our entry point for children transferring from other schools is a psychological assessment which identifies the strength and weaknesses of that individual student, so that when teachers are teaching they teach according to the specifications of the assessment. This is what our resident psychologist had to say about our students in general.

When we talk of assessment at GEC, we are talking of who this individual child was when he/she was born. We believe the brain reacts differently depending on an individual student when the teacher is teaching.

Biologically and psychologically there are four types of learners, very fast learners, fast learners, average learners that sit on the datum line of the 50% margin when the teachers are teaching and the slow learners.

These students have variation in what they produce because of the next question, ‘How long is the brain that has gotten contents full in its cubicle going to keep the contents’.

You find some students would grasp a lot such that teachers would go to sleep thinking they have done it all, only to realize the brain emptied everything.

Some students are mistaken for being slow learners simply because their brain cannot co-ordinate in time with their speech, as a result giving the teacher an impression that they don’t know the answer  if the teachers are not patient.

At George Emmanuel College we believe any student who is not mentally retarded can give us at least a C or better unless the teacher is using the wrong approach,  just like handing the stick with the right hand to someone who uses left in a relay, obviously it will fall.

George Emmanuel College becomes different for we do not mistake facilitation for teaching which is commonly done in schools.  Facilitation is a system whereby teachers guide students through the syllabus without teaching.  The system of teaching requires the teacher to transfer the knowledge to the student and this is done in a systematic way.

Most teachers are in a habit of dictating notes explaining one statement that is if they would explain at all and they ask the students to go read.  This system works with some students but not most.  It’s a cocktail for disaster.  Psychologically some students have very high listening skills and some have high reading skills.

Some parents go to an extent of paying administrators to get places where an entry point of 4-5 units is required without considering how many units theirs will be having.

The type of new environment is also important to this former grade 7 pupil.  This is an unusual transition period where the student is changing from senior to junior.

From primary the grade 7 pupil was senior and suddenly the tables have turned. An environment where there is a lot of seniority would destroy the pupil’s confidence for life.

Form 1 enrolment is the most crucial part of the academic life of every parent.  This is the time when parents are to make choices for their dear daughters and sons that will either see their children’s careers up there or some choices would destroy the children’s careers.  Choosing the right school at form one is very important.  Some parents would look at what they call “reputable schools”, depending on the beliefs of the parents.

Some parents would look at reputable schools in terms of  how much fees the school is asking for (obviously very expensive schools), such that if they are asked where their children went for form one, they would say “Nottingham”  and people would then look at them with different eyes.Reputable in the sense that it would give the upper class that they want.  Some people would look at the best in terms of pass rate rating.

Ladies and gentlemen out there, why would you expect a student who had 4-5 units in grade seven not to get atleast a C grade at ‘o’level?  Don’t you think some school would get 100% pass rate because they had taken the cream? My understanding is when ZIMSEC says 100% pass rate they mean atleast C or better.

For a parent who had a child with 4 units at grade 7 would he/she say their child have passed.  Choosing the right secondary school is very important.  George Emmanuel College High School, doing things differently.
