The Sunday Mail

A garden is a place to unwind, relax and find inner peace.

Though it may sound ambiguous since a garden is made of colour anyway, a colour garden is one that comprises of a single colour or multiple colours.

lt is designed for the sole purpose of bringing pleasure to the beholder.

The logic behind a colour garden is to surprise the eye. lmagine one colour in different textures, shapes and size of flowers.

One can design a colour garden by choosing their favourite or business colour(s).

Top on the list of garden colours is white, blue, red, purple or violet.

After choosing a colour, one needs to choose the particular plants. Each plant has its own special blooming time so preferably, selected plants should blossom at the same time or at least in the same season.

One can select plants that blossom one after the other or all year round.

Just like what happens with grey foliage plants, the leaf forms can be used to that effect as well.

When one chooses white for their garden, they can select plants such as cantharanthus roseus, chrysanthemum anethifolium, clerodendrum fragrans, osteospermum ecklonis, spiraea catoniensis for an all year white effect.

Other white flowering species for winter, spring and autumn are the camellia, cortaderia selloana, datura suaveleons, deutzia scabra, euphorbia leucocephala, hydrangea macrophylla, sambucus nigra and magnolia soulangeana.

For greater height effects, include other white magnificent flowering trees such as the ipomoea arborescens, plumeria rubra and bauhinia petersiana.

Tailor-make your venue for honey moon couples by choosing red as your main colour. Plant annual plants such as the salvias, celosia, capsicum, amaranthus, bidens formosa, clarkia, gaillardia and tropaeolum majus for a quick red effect.

For a more permanent red set-up, choose perennials like the clerodendrum speciosissimum, acalypha wilkessiana, alberta magna, aloe species, bougainvillea, callistemon citrinus, canna indica, coleus, euphorbia pulcherrima, euphorbia splendens, euphorbia cotinifolia, fuschia triphylla, gazania krebsiana and pentas lanceolata.

Trees such as the callistemon viminalis (bottle brush), delonix regia and spathodea campanulata (flame tree) will lend that charm to your site.

The is also a myriad list of orange flowering plants for your garden. Talk of arctotis breviscarpa, beloperone comisa, bidens sulphureus, calendula officinalis, cestrum aurantiacum, crocosmia masonorum, crossandra, dimorphotheca pluvialias, gazania, hamelia patens, pyracantha angustifolia, pyrostegia venusta, rudbeckia fulgida, streptosolonii jamesonii, tecomaria capensis, watsonia angusta and strelitzia reginae.
