The Sunday Mail

DOUBT MUTANGA got in touch from the heart of Masvingo rural, from an area called Nerupiri, a remote place that is also known as Mutema. The 21-year-old says he is a good footballer and got to read this column by chance after a friend brought acopy of The Sunday Mail in Nerupiri.Being a remote area, lying well outside Masvingo Urban, it is natural that fresh news will take longer to reach our readers in those parts. So it was only last week that Mutanga got to read our fourth instalment, which touched on a Harare Division Two soccer team, New Life Academy, owned by Apostle Joseph Murata. That was on August 21.
He wrote: “I read your column after a friend brought a copy to our area, I come from an area called Nerupiri or Mutema on the boundaries of Chief Gutu’s land. I am a good footballer and I appreciate your efforts to uplift sport within the church.
“Your article on New Life football team owned by Apostle Murata inspired me, it gave me the urge to pursue a soccer career seriously. I hope Apostle Murata will get my message because I want to be part of that team. I am a very good player.”
This is amazing. Our readership continues to grow and our prayers go to Mutanga, a member of the Kingdom Gospel Church, with the faith that our dear Lord will open an avenue for him.
Roman Catholic Chitungwiza on a mission
In Chitungwiza, the Roman Catholic Church is showing great desire to build and strengthening fellowship through sport.
Last weekend St Theresa Roman Catholic Church co-ordinated a Sports Day at Seke 6 High School where Catholics competed in netball and football.
Unit M from Zone 1 scooped first prize after beating Unit K from Zone 3 while Unit J were the champions in netball. “Our Sports Day went on very well, we enjoyed every minute of it. We are now looking forward to making this an annual event,” said Mr Emmanuel Manuel, St Theresa sports co-ordinator. Even the Pope loves sport
Last week Pope Francis took his personal quest to wipe out dishonesty and corruption to the sporting arena.
Launching the Vatican’s first global conference on Faith and Sport, the pope said it was important to keep sport honest and protect games from abuse.
“Sport is a human activity of great value, able to enrich people’s lives,” the pope was quoted by Religion News Services.
The three-day conference was hosted by the Pontifical Council for Culture with the support of the United Nations and the International Olympic Committee.
According to RNS, the pope has a personal passion for Argentine soccer team San Lorenzo but says the challenge was “maintaining the honesty of sport, of protecting it from manipulations and commercial abuse”.
“In sport, as in life, competing for the result is important, but playing well and fairly is even more important,” the pope was quoted saying.
There is a strong link between sport and religion, most athletes are firm believers of various religions. The Sunday Mail Religion and The Sunday Mail Sport will soon compile a list of some powerful sports personalities who are strong believers.
How about this one on internationally renowned golfer Tiger Woods. According to an American publication, Newsmax, when the golfing legend’s life was falling apart after he was exposed as a serial adulterer, he repeatedly invoked his Buddhist faith and said:
“I was raised a Buddhist and I actively practiced my faith from childhood until I drifted away from it in recent years.”
Transfiguration Cup Back home
The Transfiguration Cup, run by the Chitungwiza Christian League, is now in the third round.
Salvation Army, Freedom in Christ, Seke B, MDMI, Joma, Legends, All Saints, RCZ, Zaoga and Nyatsime were the teams that played in the second round. The CCL secretary Mr. Fungai Ngwerume will give us the full details in our next instalment.
