Four members of the same family were killed on Christmas morning while two others were critically injured when a Land Rover they were travelling in was involved in a head-on collision with a haulage truck along the N1 Highway between Makhado and Musina towns in South Africa.
The accidents occurred on the same day four other people died in road traffic accidents in Zimbabwe.
Limpopo police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Ronnel Otto yesterday said the accident occurred at around 4:45am.
“We are still investigating the exact cause of the accident, though initial indication are that the two vehicles were involved in a head on collision which killed the father, mother and two children (girls) aged 14 and two years.
“Two other boys aged eight and seven years who survived are admitted at Luis Trichardt Memorial Hospital where their condition is critical,” he said.
Lt-Col Otto said the truck driver was critically injured. The names of the deceased will be made known after next of kin have been notified.
In Zimbabwe, police said four people died and 64 were injured in 81 road traffic accidents on Christmas Day.
This takes to 17 the number of people killed in road accidents in Zimbabwe since Christmas Eve.
In a statement, Zimbabwe Republic Police spokesperson Chief Superintendent Paul Nyathi said 7 017 traffic-related arrests had been made since the start of the festive season and 121 vehicles had been impounded for various defects.
