Former Dynamos and Caps United football player Edward Muchongwe (51) – popularly known as Major Murefu during his playing days – was last week arraigned before the Mbare Magistrates’ Courts in Harare for assault and robbery. He was charged with robbery as defined under Section 126 6(1) of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act.

According to the State, on January 9 this year Muchongwe approached Justice Mujaka, who is general manager at Caps Holdings, demanding salary arrears.

Muchongwe, a general hand at the company, began clapping and punching Mujaka after failure to reach an agreement over the salary issue, it is alleged.

Mujaka, the court was told, sought protection from a company security guard but Muchongwe followed and continued to assault him. It is alleged other employees tried to rescue the complainant but the accused would threaten anyone who attempted to intervene.

Muchongwe then dragged Mujaka to his office while threatening to kill him, the State says.

“Muchongwe ordered the other employees who had gained entry to leave the office and continued threatening Mujaka until the complaint surrendered US$500 from his pocket,” said State prosecutor Mr Stanley Musekiwa.

Muchongwe was remanded out of custody on US$50 bail and magistrate Ms Jackie Manyonga referred the matter to February 2, 2014.
