THE High court has ordered the Evangelical Church of Zimbabwe Bishop Benson Makachi from interfering in the running of the church’s affairs and pave way for the holding of fresh elections for a new executive.

According to court documents, Bishop Benson Makachi’s term expired last August but he has been holding on to the top position while delaying fresh elections.

The Bishop is also accused of firing church leaders opposed to his continued stay at the helm of the Church.

In his application to the High Court, a church member Humphrey Machiri successfully obtained an order to have the elections held on the weekend of 20 and 21 March.

In granting the order, Justice Francis Bere ordered Bishop Makachi; “not to interfere in any unlawful manner in the process of election of the position of Bishop currently underway.”

Justice Bere also declared as null and void an order by Bishop Makachi’s loyalists to ignore ballot papers sent to church members in anticipation for an election.

Rev Dr Dhewa, Rev Amos Mateva, Chairperson Pastoral Council and Vice Bishop the Evangelical Church of Zimbabwe were cited as second, third and fourth respondents respectively.
