EDITORIAL COMMENT: Well done Commissar! Saviour Kasukuwere

The Sunday Mail

The Zanu-PF Secretary for the Commissariat, Cde Saviour Kasukuwere, has a mammoth task at hand. Thank God he is still young and is showing that he is not being overwhelmed by the situation.

There are so many stories and theories surrounding the Commissariat post in the ruling party, but the youthful commissar has so far managed to stamp his authority in admirable ways.

After Zanu-PF amended its constitution and gave President Mugabe the powers to appoint his deputies in a justifiable bid to destroy multiple centres of power in the party, many thought factionalism had been uprooted, but as the party begins to take stock, worrying signs are emerging.

While the move to allow the President to appoint his deputies has managed to create only one centre of power at national level, it looks like the party has to do much more to destroy multiple centres of power at provincial level.

There are some provincial leaders, like Cde Ray Kaukonde in Mashonaland East, who had entrenched themselves in their positions to such an extent that even after the supposed clean-up exercise their provinces are still stinking of their factional power games.

This is why we applaud the move yesterday by Cde Kasukuwere to dissolve the entire Mashonaland East provincial executive that was led by Cde Phineas Chihota and put in place an interim team led by Cde Aeneas Chigwedere to run the affairs of the province until April.

Cde Chigwedere will be deputised by the Minister of State for Mashonaland East, Cde Joel Biggie Matiza, who since his appointment has discovered that the Kaukonde factional wings run deep in the province with allegations that even Cde Chihota was linked to the former provincial leader.

Naturally the bold move by Cde Kasukuwere will be received with mixed feelings and he will be subjected to all sorts of abuse, but he should not be deterred from carrying out his duties by few disgruntled and misguided elements.

President Mugabe has started the clean-up exercise of the party and as commissar Cde Kasukuwere should complement his efforts by making sure that the party is cleansed right down to the cell level.

No stone should be left unturned in this exercise because for the first time in a long time, Zanu-PF has the realistic opportunity to destroy factionalism.

Reports say Cde Kasukuwere’s stop in Mashonaland East was his first stopover as he embarks of a tour across the country and that on its own shows that he is aware of the task at hand.

As a youthful commissar, Cde Kasukuwere will be accused of being overzealous and some will say “what can this mafikizolo tell us about Zanu-PF?”

The job won’t be easy, but the commissar should know that he has the protection of the President who gave him the mandate to run the party’s commissariat.

Besides Mashonaland East, tempers are simmering in Matabeleland North and other provinces.

Cde Kasukuwere will surely be a busy man over the next few months and he should not get carried away because soon it will be time for stocktaking.

And because all eyes will be on him, Cde Kasukuwere has to tread carefully.

There are so many temptations for a Zanu-PF commissar, especially a young one like him as people jostle for posts in the party.

On the other hand, Cde Kasukuwere has to guard against abusing his post as this will be his downfall.

There are so many political dynamics in Zanu-PF at the moment and Cde Kasukuwere should rise above petty factional politics as he readies the party for the 2018 elections.

Zimbabweans will be watching with keen interest as the commissar embarks on the countrywide tours.

The days of tired and clueless commissars are over and Cde Kasukuwere has to show that despite his age, he is up to the task.
