The Sunday Mail

When the First Lady Dr Grace Mugabe said a “mini Unity Accord” had been struck in Harare as she brought Zanu-PF Harare Provincial chairman Cde Amos Midzi and the province’s Youth League leader Cde Godwin Gomwe, many sober-minded and genuine supporters of the revolutionary party were relieved thinking that at last the warring parties had seen the value of unity.

The First Lady even went to the extent of calling the two to the podium and images of Cdes Midzi and Gomwe smiling widely were splashed in the media. Amai Mugabe went on to blast factionalism in Zanu-PF saying it was being promoted in the top echelons of the party.

As the thousands of people who thronged the City Sports Centre left the venue, there was optimism that the fights in Harare had been buried and factionalism was the next in line to die soon. All seemed well, until last Friday when the First Lady went to Manicaland for her Meet the People Tour.

Reports say some youths claiming to be defending the name of Zanu-PF secretary for administration Cde Didymus Mutasa clashed with their counterparts from Harare with even more disturbing news that some youths had brought knives to settle scores.

Now this is rank madness, unnecessary overzealousness and thuggery that Zanu-PF does not need. We will not be drawn into the silly and unproductive blame games, but we want to make it crystal clear to Cde Gomwe and his entourage and the so-called controversial Cde Sheila Mutsenhu and her sympathisers in Manicaland that by pushing and shoving at the rally, they had shown disgusting disrespect for the First Lady.

The two and those who were backing them should know that they cant pretend to be supporting the First Lady yet at the same time they fight like little rascals in her presence. If these two groups had burning issues, they should have taken their drama to some far away place or they could have postponed their circus for another day.

Since she started her rallies, Dr Mugabe has been spreading the message of peace, love and unity and those going against her message can’t claim to be her supporters whatever the provocation.

After the unruly behaviour in Manicaland, it may be advisable for Cde Gomwe and his team not to attend rallies by the First Lady in other provinces. We are fully aware of the need to show the First Lady solidarity and loyalty but if in trying to do this, the youths go against what she is preaching, then there is no need to follow her wherever she goes. Clearly, the First Lady has so much on her plate and lets not distract her by being irresponsible tails.

As for Cde Mutsenhu and her group, whatever provocation there was no need to retaliate. If Cde Gomwe and his team were attacking the Manicaland Provincial leadership, well-mannered youths who know gwara remusangano would have alerted the police because they are the ones vested with powers to handle such matters.

Youths who take the law into their own hands are nothing but hooligans who have no place in Zanu-PF. We hope that as the First Lady continues her Meet the People Tour this week, the drama that took place in Manicaland will be a thing of the past.

We also hope that the message she is preaching about peace, love and unity is being received by all Zimbabweans because this is the only way we can conquer the challenges that the country is facing.

As for Zanu-PF, lets show the First Lady genuine support as she continues with her Meet the People Tour.
