A sincere entreaty to the lunatic fringe

There is a section of our society — which we can only describe as a lunatic fringe — that is palpably out of touch with reality and out of step with the rest of the country.

This is a lunatic fringe that would have us believe that President Mugabe is a pariah, is isolated and is embattled.

And yet just 18 months ago was elected by an overwhelming majority to lead this country for another five years, was six months ago elected Sadc Chair, and was two days ago elected as Chair of the African Union.

Surely this cannot be the anatomy of a man who is as hated as the local political opposition and their grotesquely lunatic fringe private media poodles would have everyone believe.

On July 31, 2013 the people of Zimbabwe made it abundantly clear that what they rather believe is that President Mugabe is the best person to lead them.

They rejected the lies, they rejected the delusions and they rejected the ramblings of a lunatic fringe whose only consistency has been in predictably getting it all wrong when gauging the mood of the people and relating to them what is actually going on in the country.

Not only are President Mugabe’s opponents out of touch with reality and out of step with the rest of Zimbabwe, they have also been left behind by the international community that they have been lying to so blatantly for the past 15 or so years.

The election to Chair SADC and the election to Chair the AU is ample evidence of how divorced this lunatic fringe is from reality.

Just the other week one of the voodoo artists of this lunatic fringe tried to tell the world, via Twitter, that Zambians were engaging in huge demonstrations against President Mugabe when our leader was in that country for a Presidential inauguration.

What she didn’t tell us was that this demo by a handful of people was taking place at a hotel where an opposition leader had just conceded defeat to President Edgar Lungu and that President Mugabe was nowhere near that display of madness by Zambia’s own lunatic fringe. (It would seem every country has one such fringe, a cross we must all bear.)

It is instructive that no one in the international media — including the outlet that the tweeting journalist works for — picked up on that non-story.

Only the lunatic fringe did; and lied to itself that “massive” demos against President Mugabe had “rocked” Lusaka.

Also instructive is that this lunatic fringe did not see the rousing welcome President Mugabe received from Zambians at the inauguration itself.

It would perhaps be asking a bit too much of the lunatic fringe to appreciate that Zimbabweans have matured, Africans have moved forward and that they have been left behind blinded by the dust they raise for themselves.

But it would not be too much to ask them to have some self-respect and realise that they are doing no one any good by persistently seeking to retard progress by clinging to discredited viewpoints that Zimbabweans and Africans have long since rejected.

And on the day that President Mugabe left for Addis Ababa where he was to assume his position as AU Chair, the French were here in Harare seeking to do business.

Before that, the Turks were here. And the British. And the Russians. And the Chinese. And more are going to come.

The world has moved forward, leaving the lunatic fringe behind.

People are thinking of progress, not holding bombastic Press conferences and publishing lunacy posing as news.

And because we are one nation, one people, we invite the lunatic fringe to join hands with us so that we can all go forward together.
