IS Ledwine Dondo Zimbabwe netball team’s secret weapon as the angle for World Cup qualification?

She led the Gems to their first Africa Netball Championship in 2015 and two years later they were crowned champions of the Hong Kong Tri-nations tournament.

At an advanced age of 67, Dondo decided to quit coaching and Lloyd Makunde took over last year.

But Dondo is back, as team manager for the Gems’ Africa Championship campaign in Zambia from August 14-19.

The tournament is also serving as a World Cup qualifier for the 2019 tournament set for Liverpool in England.

“Netball is in my blood,” said Dondo with a chuckle.

“When ZINA (Zimbabwe Netball Association) approached me to be the team manager for this huge tournament, I couldn’t say no because I love my country and I love this sport.

“I haven’t lost touch with the team, I have been following their preparations even before they went to Namibia recently.

“The team is strong and playing well, we will do our best to qualify,” said Dondo.

Zina president Letitia Chipandu called Dondo the ‘best adviser’ in their quest for a maiden World Cup appearance.

“She is vastly experienced, her presence will give us the best guidance at the tournament.

“For Zimbabwe netball this is a huge opportunity to shine on the world stage, of course the competition in Zambia will be tough, but I have confidence in our preparations,” said Chipandu.

Zimbabwe is expected to leave for Zambia this week with the aim of finishing in the top two to qualify for the 2019 World Cup.
