There are many things to be considered when it comes to organising a gig, especially one featuring an international artiste.

Proper planning and aggressive marketing are some of the elements that should not be overlooked, a lesson which was learnt the hard way by organisers of Donald’s show which was held at Solomon’s Lifestyle Café in Glen View on Friday.

This was poised to be a massive gig as it was being headlined by one of South Africa’s finest artistes who has a huge fan base, especially among the ladies, but alas, that was not to be with just a few people turning up for the event.

However, the poor attendance came as no surprise considering that very little was done to market the show.

Organisers only put out a poster that was circulating on social media, something that proved to be ineffective as it failed to generate any hype in the run-up to the event.

But despite the poor attendance, the artiste managed to give those who had come value for their money, delivering a solid performance that had the ladies singing along and screaming for the greater part of the set.

Making a grand entrance with his hit song, “I Deserve”, he kept the tempo on a high as he followed up with a string of sing-along numbers.

“Over the Moon”, “Rain Drops”, “Never Let You Go” and “Denial” were among some of the hits that he performed.

When Donald left the stage, local star Bryan K came on and performed his hit single “Heavy Machine”, with the response from the crowd proving that the young man has what it takes to challenge continental heavyweights.

Speaking to The Sunday Mail Society, one of the organisers, Farai Mushava admitted that they had blundered both in the preparation and marketing of the show.

“This was going to be a good show because Donald’s performance was on point but unfortunately only a few people came through,” said Mushava.

“I think in the future we need to improve in several areas, chief among them being marketing because if we had properly advertised this show, this place would have been packed.”

Bad planning was also evident. The artiste was only cleared on the day he was supposed to perform.

“The other reason why we failed to push this gig properly is because the artiste had not been cleared and we only got clearance on the day of the show.

“Had we failed to get him cleared, there might not have been a show to speak of. At least we jumped that huddle and managed to satisfy the people who came.”

Mushava said they have engaged several other international acts who are set to perform at the joint in the near future.
