A golf tournament to raise funds for the rehabilitation of production units for the Danhiko Project has been set for May 29 at Chapman Golf Club.
Sources yesterday revealed a diamond will be auctioned on the night. Director of the Danhiko Project, Phone Kufakwedeke said the initial date of April 25 was waived to pave way for the Zimbabwe International Trade Fair and ensure maximum attention will be given to the golf tournament.

“Professional golfers have been invited to participate where a registration fee will be paid. We also expect people to contribute in the form of material and finance as long as this puts us back on track to capacitate our production units.

“The objective is to raise funds to enhance the operations of different activities taking place here such as the garment, shoe making and carpentry departments,” Kufakwedeke said. Approximately $110 000 is required to rehabilitate these departments that will also fund a chicken project and a hydrotherapy to rehabilitate the physically challenged. Students at the vocational and skills training institution some of whom are wheelchair-bound, on crutches and have hearing impairments lack equipment which includes hearing aids and wheelchairs.

Danhiko Project was started in 1980 in Mbare before it moved to Msasa in 1981. It was started by ex-combatants injured during the liberation struggle and in need of rehabilitation. Kufakwedeke also appreciated the role the First Lady Amai Grace Mugabe has played in raising the profile of the Danhiko Project and Danhiko Annual Paralympic Games as patron for the past 16 years.

“The profile of the games was raised by the participation of the First Lady when she became the patron of Danhiko Project. Then you can see that it has risen to greater heights. This golf tournament is the beginning. Once we have started it will attract other people and hopefully those physically challenged who are able to play golf will get the interest,” Kufakwedeke added.
