Preparations for the 21st February Movement celebrations to be hosted by Masvingo province at Mucheke stadium next month have gone a gear up with Zanu PF establishing eight sub-committees to spearhead various activities ahead of the annual event that coincides with President Robert Mugabe’s birthday.
The President turns 92 next month on the 21st of February.
Zanu PF Masvingo provincial secretary for commissariat, Cde Jappy Jaboon yesterday confirmed the establishment of the sub-committees.
These are in charge of organization and mobilization, documentation, security and accreditation, entertainment, health, information, transport and welfare together with resource mobilization.
Cde Jaboon said Masvingo had also set a target to raise US$100 000 for the festivities while the other provinces are each expected to chip in with US$30 000.
He said the national co-ordination committee that is chaired by Zanu PF secretary for Youth in the politburo, Cde Pupurai Togarepi and Zanu PF youth chair for Masvingo Province, Cde Nobert Ndaarombe would lead preparations.
“We are planning to hold the biggest ever 21st February Movement celebrations, this will be in term of the number of people who are expected to attend and the activities that will take place on one of the most important days on our national calendar,’’he said.
Cde Jaboon added that the organization and mobilization sub-committee has already started holding inter-district meetings to build momentum across the province.
“Members of the national co-ordination committee led by Cde Togarepi have already visited the venue of the celebrations and expressed satisfaction with the situation on the ground,’’ he said.
Senior Zanu PF politburo member, Cde Josaya Hungwe also revealed plans to lead a team that will hold fundraising meetings across all the country’s 10 provinces.
“We want to honour our President in a very special way and we are planning the biggest and most colourful celebrations ever, considering the sterling work that President Mugabe has done for the people of Zimbabwe,’’ said Cde Hungwe.
The 21st February Movement celebrations were conceived in 1986 and are aimed at making sure that youths get inspiration from President Mugabe’s life.
