GOVERNMENT has awarded Robmeck Builders and Contractors a US$2,3 million tender to construct model apartments under the Civil Servants Housing Scheme.

Secretary for Local Government, Public Works and National Housing Engineer George Mlilo said the contractor would build two blocks of 16 units each in Highfield, Harare.

Model blocks in other provinces will be constructed after flighting of tenders.

Eng Mlilo said for Harare, the Highfield model flats would determine the final price of each unit to enable calculation of monthly contributions towards the scheme.

The deductions will be made through the Salaries Services Bureau.

“The contractor, Robmeck Builders and Contractors, has just been notified. They will tell us when construction starts,” he said.

“Civil servants are now approaching banks such as CABS, NBS and CBZ where they can access loans to pay for the flats.”

Since October 2016, at least 75 000 civil servants from the health, uniformed forces, agriculture and teaching sectors have signed up for the scheme.

Government is targeting over 100 000 beneficiaries.
