THE modern church is taking a new trajectory that is generating a lot of interest. With the mushrooming of new churches so too have emerged new ways and ideas of “worshipping”.

One church that has taken this to new heights is the Unity Apostolic Church, where several activities like aerobics are encouraged.

The church holds its services in Harare and last week it had a congregant take fellow worshippers through aerobic paces before a service. In their orange and white uniforms, congregants followed the instructor’s paces.

After the aerobics, it was time for the kids to model their way to the podium where they gave various presentations.

Pastor Emmanuel Mwale said the youngsters were showcasing their God-given talents and aerobics helped people stay fit.

“There is nothing sinister in doing aerobics in the house of God. As we all know, aerobics are one good way of exercising and they keep people fit. With the few minutes that the church members perform them we are in a way encouraging them to develop the habit of always exercising. And it is through this practice that they keep the ‘temple of God’ fit and pure.

“This is the reason why there were many strong men and women in the Bible because they lived a healthy life. And this is also the reason why doctors encourage people to always exercise. And as the church we are adding our voice to this call by making it practical in the church,” explained Pastor Mwale.

Pastor Mwale – who is also a musician and fashion designer – said it was part of his church’s mandate to nurture and promote talent.

“Modeling is an art, and if used properly, it can sustain people. These kids were modeling as part of rehearsals for our Big Sunday to be held soon. As kids, they should have their own way of entertaining the congregation and there is nothing bad about them modeling.

“In fact, we also groom them in the various fields like music and dance,” Pastor Mwale said.
