CHIPAWO joined the rest of the world on 16 June 2015 to celebrate the day of the African child and called the day “our CHIPAWO day”.

They took to social media site Facebook to post their sentiments on the day.

“We celebrate the freedom of expression we have to be able to showcase our given gifts through dance, songs, music, drama, theatre, and we air our views and we are heard.

Today we say let this day be a day for today only you hear us, but every day hear our voices and what we feel and support the African child and make our dreams come true. HAPPY INTERNATIONAL DAY OF THE AFRICAN CHILD #ProudtobeanAfricanchild” read their post.

The Day of the African Child has been celebrated every year since 1991, when it was first initiated by the Organisation of African Unity.

It honors those who participated in the Soweto Uprising in 1976 on that day.

It also raises awareness of the continuing need for improvement of the education provided to African children.

This year, the day was celebrated under the theme “Accelerating our collective efforts to end Child Marriage in Africa.”

Students are welcome to write about that theme and have their articles published in The Sunday Mail Bridge.
