Bryan K comes of age

THIS coming Saturday, Bryan Kadengu will launch his second album, “EvolutionK”, at Mzimba Shopping Centre in his hometown of Chinhoyi.

Dubbed the Homecoming Concert, the album launch will also feature DJ Stavo, Coco Master, Crugger and Chinhoyi High School Band, among others.

It has been four years since the talented musician released his first album, “Nyaya Dzerudo”. In an interview with The Sunday Mail Society, the “Heavy Machine” hit-maker said the new album will be a display of how his music has evolved over the years. “Bryan K has evolved as a person and as an artiste. The music on my first album was good, but I have gone an extra mile on this one,” he said.

“The music is more mature, from the composition to the arrangement. I moved away from music that is simply meant to bang in the club, to addressing various issues affecting society.”

While the artiste calls his sound Afro-soul, the new project is generally made up of various genres. “The album is a mixed bag. We can simply call it African music. While I don’t like being bound by genres, I’m influenced by the likes of Mateo and Ringo to mention just a few, something that people will discover when they listen to the new music.”

The album has been two years in the making, with the artiste recording more than 70 tracks. “I have been recording music for the past two years while searching for the perfect songs that would finally make up the album. After putting together the track-list, I had to sit down with several people and listen to it over and over again, just to make sure the album was flowing,” said Bryan K, adding, “I wanted a scenario whereby one can listen to the whole album without skipping a song.”

Bryan K says the new project’s message is that of love, peace and unity.

“There is a song titled ‘Mazvinzwa’. It addresses the stereotype that men have loose morals. I was trying to highlight that there are men out there who are actually honest and live in a straight path.

“Another interesting song is ‘Chengetanai’, which encourages people to take care of each other, rather than being selfish. If I see that there are things that are lacking in your life and I am in a position to help you out, I should do so, rather than just looking out for myself.”

‘‘Ndopenga’’, featuring Dobba Don and the bonus track, ‘‘Sound of Summer’’ with DJ Stavo, are the two collaborations on the album. Other songs to look out for include ‘‘Pole Pole’’, ‘‘Keresenzia’’, ‘‘Chihuya’’ and ‘‘Kumusha’’. Bryan K first appeared on the limelight after winning the Starbrite 2012 edition, a feat he followed up by releasing his debut album, ‘‘Nyaya Dzerudo’’ two years later.

While his career did not explode then, he finally got his big break when he released ‘‘Heavy Machine’’ in 2016.

The same year, he collaborated with Mr Kamera on ‘‘Pamusika’’, a track that later featured Gemini Major and Ice Prince.

He has since performed on both local and international platforms, including Lake of Stars in Malawi and the Bushfire Festival in Swaziland.

He has shared the stage with numerous major acts including Micasa, Fally Ipupa and Mr Eazi, to name just a few.
