She dared where others feared and by so doing fulfilled ‘a painful wish’ that had stuck out like a sore thumb among the grassroots.

For years, issues have been swept under the carpet, maybe to save certain establishments.

However, the grassroots had become impatient and thought the camaraderie approach was in fact destroying Zanu-PF.

And in came the First Lady Dr Grace Mugabe, ushering in a new political dynamic in Zanu-PF — the gospel of truth and nothing else but the truth.

As such, in Harare they called her “The Queen of Peace”, while in Mutare they chanted “Unifier”, Matabeleland was not to be outdone and they coined the song “Umama, the nation’s own Cremora” and in Mashonaland Central they screamed “Amai, chirera nherera.”

“VeWomen’s League vakaona kuti vane asset pana Amai Mugabe, saka I will not take people for granted. Why would I lie just to please people, it is not good, only the truth should be told,” she declared last Friday at Rudhaka Stadium.

The grassroots are happy, for the truth shall set people free and see Zanu-PF forge ahead while the weak falter by the wayside.

Dr Mugabe’s entrance into mainstream politics following her nomination for the Women’s League top post has brought with it a refreshing era of straight talk while her incisive approach to social issues has connected her with the masses.

The First Lady concluded her heavily subscribed nationwide “Meet the people” whirlwind tour before a decent crowd at Rudhaka Stadium in Marondera on Friday where she tore into the Mashonaland East provincial leadership for fanning factionalism.

Dr Mugabe’s candid criticism of factionalism and inept party leaders has become synonymous with her addresses since the first leg of the tour in Mashonaland West a fortnight ago.

“Ndiri muMbire chaiye akakwana, Mwenewazvo, handisi mutyutyu ini . . . handitye. Ivo Mwari vakatozvionawo kuti VaMugabe vaitodawo mukadzi anenge ini. Maindiona kunyarara maiti ndiri fuza,” she said.

“Vamwe vanhu vanoda kuti vadiwe nekunyepera vanhu, but people will scrutinise all that you promise them and at the end of the day they will turn against you once they realise you lied to them . . . saka chokwadi chakangonaka,” said Dr Mugabe to a thunderous applause from the thousands of party supporters who braved the scorching October heat to throng Rudhaka Stadium.

“The moment of truth has arrived,” the First Lady declared a fortnight ago during the Mashonaland Central Province leg of the tour.

True to her word, her no-holds-barred attack on corrupt party leaders shocked thousands gathered at Chipadze.

In Gweru, she blasted incompetent party chairmen and called for their replacement with new leaders “who have new ideas.”

Harare witnessed the arrival of a new dispensation in intra party politics as Dr Mugabe brokered peace between Harare provincial chairman Ambassador Amos Midzi and youth chair Godwin Gomwe.

In stunning fashion, Amai Mugabe called Harare South MP Cde Shadreck Mashayamombe, who allegedly led crusades to elbow the First Lady out of the running for the Women’s League top post, onto the stage and publicly made peace with the lawmaker.

“Huya pano Mashayamombe . . . uri munhu wenyama unotadza, tese tinotadza. Only God is infallible saka nhasi ndoda kuti pamberi pevanhu ndakuregerera, zvakaitika kare zvakatopfuura,” Dr Mugabe announced as the crowd broke into song and dance at Harare’s City Sports Centre.

In Mutare she was frank, declaring Manicaland as “the problem child” of Zanu-PF and warned politicians against using her to settle personal scores.

“I don’t want anyone to see me as theirs . . . I have thought about this and realised that if I’m not careful, I will be used.

“There are people who have their scores to settle, but don’t try to use me to settle your scores. I want to remind you especially at the top, you should know that I am a mature woman now. I will be 50 soon,” she charged at Sakubva Stadium.

Throughout her national tour, her trademark has been to preach the gospel of truth, much to the pleasure of those who cared to listen attentively without malice or prejudice.

Dr Mugabe took Matabeleland by storm as the crowds she drew bore testimony. She kicked off her tour of the region at Gwanda’s Pelandaba Stadium (Matabeleland South), proceeding to Somhlolo in Lupane (Mat North) before rounding off in the Metropolitan province of Bulawayo at Amazulu Sports Club.

They called her “Mother of the Nation” and in true motherly style, she was determined to put the house in order.

“Baba Mugabe is very tolerant. I am talking from an informed position. All these people, I know who’s good at their job and who’s not.

“I know it, but when we meet them we say: ‘Hello Minister, how are you?’ We respect them. At times, I say Baba, the forgiveness is too much. We want people to be in positions on merit, people who will work for us,” she said.

For once, the general street talk in Bulawayo is no longer about the disappointing Highlanders Football Club, the vibe is now about Umama, her frankness and the charisma she exuded during her tour.

But the best was yet to come, as the First Lady upped the tempo in Mashonaland Central on Thursday, openly denouncing factional and corrupt leaders who hail from the province before dressing down Mashonaland East province chairman Cde Ray Kaukonde, whom she accused of using money to divide the party, the following day.

“Those who live in glass houses should not dare throw stones, the moment of truth ichasvika very soon,” she went on amid thunderous applause from the crowd, some of whom were perched on tall trees just to catch a glimpse of the woman of the moment.

“Factionalism iri kubikwa muno muMashonaland Central, muno yatoora, kuora chaiko. Vanhu kutadza kufunga nefactionalism.

“Zvino ndakati kuna Baba Mugabe, munhu iyeye ari kutungamira factionalism toda kuti mumuite baby dumping. Mukasa mudumper isusu tichamudumper. Tichaita isu baby dumping nekuti zvino divider musangano.”

The crowd then went into frenzy and began to sing: “Iyi ndiyo sungano, hee varume musaputse sungano, sungano yacho ndeyaMwari,”

Dr Mugabe then went on to demonstrate that she was not only after politics but the betterment of people’s livelihoods.

“Tinozviziva muno mune zvicherwa zvikuru sei segoridhe asi vechidiki havasi kuwana mukana wekuwana cheuviri kubva mazviri,” she said.

“We will advocate for the provision of mining equipment for these youths so that they will form consortiums, mine legally and eke a living out of our natural resources.”

Dr Mugabe blasted rampant corruption and exploited various jokes as she hammered home her point.

“Unotoona munhu achitengesa machira emusangano akanzi naBaba Mugabe apihwe vanhu pachena.

“Iye futi ndiye anoti Baba Mugabe havachaita, saka kana zvakadaro isa face yemurume wako pamachira iwawo tigoona kuti anotengwa here,” she said, drawing laughter from the huge crowd.

Perhaps, like the old adage goes, Dr Mugabe reserved the best for the last.

In, Mashonaland East, her home province, she descended heavily on Cde Kaukonde, the provincial chairman.

“VaKaukonde itovapai chigaro chinotonhora nekuti chigaro chavo chiri kupisa, mogovapa Mazoe Orange Crush kuti vagotonhorerwa nekuti kwatakuenda kwakaipa,” Dr Mugabe warned as she prepared to engage into overdrive.

“Kune chimhuka chinonzi factionalism changomuka, chimhuka chandisingazive kuti chakabva nekupi.

“VaKaukonde mati imimi Mai Muchinguri makaita zvakanaka kupa Mai Mugabe chigaro, handina kuita wrestle chigaro kuna Mai Muchinguri, handina kuita chekunobvuta, nekuti zvatavakuona izvi zvakuita sekubvuta chigaro chaVaMugabe.

“Iyeyu Kaukonde ndiye anoshandiswa zvefactionalism. Munoziva iye zvino vanoti mauya mai, vachinyemwerera mazino akanaka kudai.

“Nyemwerera tione, asi ifake smile. It’s a fake smile. Ifake iyi ndiri kutokutaurirai, ndichingobva pano zvonzi kamukadzi kaMugabe kanopenga, KaMugabe kachembera.

“Iyeyu ah, munhu ngaudzwe chokwadi ngaarege kunyepa because he is the chairman of the province.

“Mukamiswa apa kuti chitaurai, tichazoona kuti achembera ndaVaMugabe here kana kuti ndiwe Kaukonde,” the First Lady cornered Cde Kaukonde much to the satisfaction of the gathered crowd.

Her exploits have captured the imagination of the nation and in just two weeks, the First Lady has risen to become the most-talked-about politician.
