The Zimbabwe National Boxing Control Board will this year be hoping for brighter days beginning with a bid to have new appointments and resources allocated from the Sports Ministry.

Since its appointment by then Education, Sport, Arts and Culture minister David Coltart in 2013, the ZNBCB has not moved, with secretary-general Gilbert Munetsi and another official Ed Hammond resigning due to lack of Government support.

Further, board members Alexander Kwangwari and Dr Farai Muchena gave up attending meetings while Gweru-based Rangarirai Dzimba has never attended any meeting citing lack of resources to finance his attendance.

ZNBCB chair Paul Nenjerama said they had alerted the ministry to the vacancies.

“We have asked the ministry to fill the gaps created by resignations of other members. The Act says the board shall consist of no less than five members.

“We have not received anything from the ministry and as such we have members like Charles Dzimba who send apologies whenever we host meetings because we cannot cater for his transport, accommodation as well as sitting allowances,” Nenjerama said.

Section 6 of the Boxing and Wrestling Act stipulates that board members shall not receive remuneration in respect of their services to the board but may out of the funds of the board be paid allowances to cover expenses reasonably incurred by them when they attend meetings or engage in board business.

“There are no resources from the Government; we operate by the grace of God and the generosity of individuals who chip in here and there. As one of the ministry’s three parastatals we submitted our budgets, our minutes and bank accounts but we have received nothing,” Nenjerama said.

The four remaining members are Nenjerama, promoter Lorraine Muringi, Tsitsi Muzuva and Patrick Mukondiwa.

Sport, Arts and Culture Deputy Minister Tabitha Kanengoni-Malinga last week said she would engage the board members on their problems.
