I saw what has to be the best election poster ever this past week. It exhorted the electorate to vote for a candidate called Nobody.
ai???Vote for Nobody. Nobody will keep election promises. Nobody will listen to your concerns. Nobody will help the poor and unemployed. Nobody cares. Nobody tells the truth.ai???
Many within Zimbabwe might be feeling like they should go for Nobody right now, their appetite for politics blunted by the intense jostling that has characterised developments in the ruling party in recent weeks with very little mention being made of the economy.
Here and there some voices have piped up saying, ai???What of bread and butter? What of industry? What of manufacturing? What of mining?ai???
And they cannot be heard above the political din.
No one knows where Finance Minister Chinamasa is, except when he is mentioned within the context of him belonging or not belonging to a faction.
The same for Industry Minister Bimha, Agriculture Minister Made, Mines Minister Chidhakwa, Indigenisation Minister Nhema and all the other ai???economyai??? ministers.
Perhaps that is because we are political animals, almost every one of us.
And it is not just any politics that engross us, it is the politics of Zanu-PF.
What else would explain the near-total invisibility of MDC-Tai??i??s congress even in its usually cheer-leading media who would now rather devote acres of space to our First Lady of Grace? (And by the way, did anyone else notice how this same ai???independentai??? media claimed RGM was fomenting a coup against his juniors? It takes amazing flights of delusion to even assume such a thing is logical!)
Anyone visiting from the back of beyond would immediately see that the bedrock of our society is politics.
A fellow clergyman, in a discussion on this matter during the course of the past week, said Zimbabwe was better of building its society on the bedrock of economy and that politics should play second fiddle.
It makes sense. At first. But on closer analysis, it is a rather flawed approach to development – especially within our supposedly post-colonial context.
Back at the seminary, they tried to teach us something about how some sociologists say societies are founded on culture. Everything else flows from this: a political culture, an economic culture.
Italian political philosopher Gransci goes even further, pointing us in the direction we ought to be taking, but which we shun for the sophistry of trying to found a society and its development solely on economy.
It is all about ideas: the ideas that inform the culture that will inform the politics and the economics.
Susan George, in her 1997 revisit of Gramsci, referred to it aptly as ai???winning the war of ideasai???.
She says, ai???For those who may not be familiar with the great Italian Marxist philosopher Gramsci, he forged the concept of ai???cultural hegemonyai??i?? and was among the first to see that ideas were not just icing on the economic cake but crucial to the success of any political project. This is what the right has understood and the left, sadly, has not.ai???
The Bishop assumes that Zimbabwe belongs to the left. And that like many others on the left it has not fully appreciated the centrality of ideas to the political and economic project called Zimbabwe.
George deconstructs the manufacturing and financing of the ideas (ideology) that inform the current global financial and trade architecture. The article is available online. The thumbticians – as Nathaniel Manheru would call them – might find time to track it down and do more than ai???browseai??? it.
The bottom line is that the West has funded the growth of its ideas, their permeation into all spheres of life, and that today they are even prepared to bomb you into accepting those ideas.
We, on the other hand, have become sedentary consumers of other peopleai??i??s ideas.
And this is particularly frustrating because Zanu-PF was founded on ideas. It prosecuted a war on the basis of ideas. It formed the countryai??i??s first democratic government on those foundational ideas.
Then somewhere along the line those ideas started to play second fiddle to the ideas of others, hence structural adjustment. Our ideas started wilting under the pressure of corruption, greed and power hunger.
Bringing us to the brave new world of today.
There is a palpable attempt, if you peer through the raging storm, to revert to those foundational ideas and it is being primarily – at least publicly – led by our First Lady of Grace.
Maybe it is a legacy issue for RGM: after land reform and indigenisation, it is Zanu-PF that now needs fixing to set it back on the path from which it deviated when the lust for office by some set in.
So yes, we are political animals. We shall keep blabbing about factions, office holders and successors.
What is important is that this political discourse is informed by ideas, that the people we place in office bring ideas to the table ai??i?? ideas that take us forward as a nation, that these ideas feed into our broader foundational values of economic empowerment and dignity for all.
The December Congress provides Zanu-PF with an opportunity to bring ideas back to the centre of its organisation, and as the ruling party this will in turn bring ideas back to our politics and economics.
