Bishop Lazarus - COMMUNION

Bishop Lazarus – COMMUNION

Youthful Zanu-PF MP, Justice Wadyajena is on the rampage giving Tyson jab after jab. Tyson, a pound for pound politician wasnai??i??t really ready for this one. He never thought Wadyajena was ready for 12 rounds. In Manicaland, Mandi Chimene has removed the gloves as she tries to box the lights out of lovely sister Oppah Muchinguri. Looks like Muchinguri is dazed.

But then, all that has to be put on hold – Zimbabwe is mourning a ai???heroai??? – Cecil our dear lion is gone. Please bear with us in these difficult times.

This sermon will centre mainly on our dear Cecil, where I will preach from a Biblical point of view the relationship between human beings and animals. The sermon will also venture into communication as I preach a little about our dear Cecil and the agenda-setting theory.

Donai??i??t worry dear reader, I wonai??i??t bombard you with too many of those communication theories. I will put you on hold for now by telling you that in 2015, there are some Americans who still think Africa is a country where the inhabitants speak one language called African.

These Americans think that right up to the North of this country called Africa, there is a desert with Arabs, camels and some pyramids. At the centre of this Africa, there is a jungle with vast forests, wild animals and Mt Kilimanjaro while the leader of this country – Nelson Mandela – stayed south of this county, in the capital city called South Africa.

These are the Americans crying for Cecil. They canai??i??t imagine themselves coming to this ai???jungleai??? with dear Cecil gone. Where will they ever come face-to-face with the world as it was in the 13th century? Cecil was never supposed to die.

Hold it there dear reader, I have a few words for some comrades in Zanu-PF who are fast getting carried away. Kuita mapenzi anhonga pito. As a Bishop, a very well-connected Bishop for that matter, I need to preach to these comrades so that when grief visits then, as it certainly will, they wonai??i??t say ai???but Bishop, you didnai??i??t warn usai??i??.

Clearly, as things are unfolding, it looks like Savior ai???Tysonai??? Kasukuwere didnai??i??t handle the Marange-Zimunya Community Share Ownership Trust issue properly and a respectable gentleman would accept his mistakes early so that we all save time and the scarce resources.

Maybe Tyson has some other explanation, maybe he will give his explanation some other day but for now he hasnai??i??t said much to convince this Bishop. There are too many grey areas and the puzzle is just not fitting.

On the other hand, while it is his duty as chairman of the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Youth, Indigenisation and Economic Empowerment, Wadyajena should not play to the gallery, as he was doing this past week.

Donai??i??t get me wrong dear reader, if Tyson has a case to answer he needs to do that, but Wadyajenaai??i??s body language in Parliament told the story of someone seeking to fix and win an argument. Zimbabweans are not looking for winners in that Marange-Zimunya issue. All they want are answers so that as a country, if mistakes were made, we learn from them and move forward.

Just imagine how much the country stands to gain if Tyson with all his energy (we all agree Tyson is doing a good job at his new ministry) and Wadyajena with all his zeal (give it to him, whoever thought someone could take Tyson head-on like that) were to combine forces and work progressively for this beloved country?

As if the parliamentary boxing is not enough, from Manicaland we have the provincial affairs minister Chimene tearing Politburo member Muchinguri to pieces. Things are really getting nasty kumakomoyo.

Chimene is claiming that Muchinguri is fanning divisions in the province. Well, I wonai??i??t preach much on this one because this sounds like some grudge that started way back and its playing out now just because the two now hold ministerial posts.

Chimene doesnai??i??t need to look very far to see what can happen to her if she gets too drunk with power. As she drives from Mutare, she can pass through Marondera and get shocking notes from Joel Biggie Matiza. Chimene needs to slow down and cool down.

On the other hand, Muchinguri is such a veteran of the liberation struggle and some of us are actually surprised that some people group her with the likes of Tyson when in actual fact, she is a veteran in her own right.

If what Chimene is saying is true and the recording thatai??i??s doing the rounds indeed came from her, then Muchinguri is reducing herself and she may have to give Margaret Dongo a call and get lessons on ai???how to put war credentials to waste.ai???

In June this year, President Mugabe warned people who were pushing either of the countryai??i??s Vice Presidents to become Zimbabweai??i??s next leader saying they were creating another ai???Gamatox.ai???

That should be warning enough to the likes of Tyson, Wadyajena, Muchinguri, Chimene and many others who seem to be all mixed up. Take this Bishop serious – someone will cry long and hard very soon. Tears of grief will flow very soon. Donai??i??t say your dear Bishop didnai??i??t warn you.

Still on grief, I said we are mourning our ai???heroai??? Cecil. Cecil was never supposed to die. Misodzi pamatama for dear Cecil.

But then, something strange is happening. Someone has hijacked our funeral. A stranger is mourning more than the bereaved. Wait a minute, who exactly has died here? Why are foreigners stealing our funeral?

As we unpack this Cecil issue, let me go Biblical a bit. But before that I need to declare that it was wrong to kill that lion, not because it was called Cecil, but because that was illegal. The story ends there.

The hullabaloo thatai??i??s coming from the international media is unwarranted, unnecessary and stupid if you ask me. Ask the parks people in Zimbabwe and they will tell you that so many lions, zebras, baboons, giraffes, elephants, rhinos, etcetera have been killed over the years in exactly the same illegal way and the international media is well aware of this.

Why wasnai??i??t there so much noise? Was Cecil more equal than other animals? Or let me say, was Cecil more equal than human beings?

From the days of creation, God clearly says human beings are more superior to animals. Genesis 1 vs 26-28 and Psalm 8 vs 4-8 confirms this with Mathew 10 vs 29-31 going a step further saying man is more valuable to God than animals.

Now, why is the international media led by CNN, BBC, Sky News, Reuters and AFP making it appear as if that lion is more important than the close to 15 million people in Zimbabwe?

Many Zimbabweans have died due to the illegal sanctions imposed on this country by the US and Europe. Why are those people not a big issue on CNN, BBC and so on?

I am not being political here. I am a mere Bishop and I can tell you that I have lost quite a number of my congregants due to the illegal sanctions, yet there has been stone silence from the international media which suddenly want to appear to love this country.

Zimbabweans are supposed to be fools and indeed, hakuna dunhu risina benzi, but no, we canai??i??t let the international media set the agenda of whatai??i??s topical in Zimbabwe. We canai??i??t let the international media create and define heroes for us. NO!

Students of communication will tell you of whatai??i??s called the Agenda-Setting Theory which was propounded by theorists Maxwell McCombs and Donald Shaw in their Chapel Hill study in 1968.

The Agenda-Setting Theory says the media (mainly the news media) arenai??i??t always successful at telling us what to think, but they are quite successful at telling us what to think about.

This theory goes a long way in explaining why people with similar media exposure place importance on the same issues. Although different people may feel differently about the issue at hand, most people feel the same issues are important.

The media achieve this through among other things – priming ai??i?? which is giving certain news lots of space and time thereby making those issue more prominent and framing – the selective control of news which shapes and contextualise news.

The international media is on the verge of hypnotizing Zimbabweans and the world with this Cecil issue, and they have deployed the Agenda-Setting Theory to maximum effect.

Itai??i??s like Zimbabwe is at stand still as the hunt for the hunter continues. The story about Cecil is the only story that is newsworthy from Zimbabwe and Cecil is Zimbabweai??i??s only hero.

Environmentalists across the world have taken Animalism from George Orwellai??i??s Animal Farm to shocking levels. Animalism, from Orwellai??i??s perspective revolves around the idea that animals are superior to people and that people are the enemy.

Cecil is more important than all human beings in Zimbabwe. Even the supposedly missing Itai Dzamara has never been given such publicity by the international media.

But hold on, we need to mourn, and mourn hard because this lion was called Cecil. Remember that other Cecil from our dark history? If this lion was called Mbuya Nehanda, Kaguvi or Lobengula we were never supposed to mourn. In fact, so many lions have been killed in the same illegal way, but we never mourned. We actually donai??i??t mourn animals, but Cecil.

This Bishop is getting petty, I hear you say, but no. Indeed we were supposed to mourn Cecil. You see, Cecil was being studied by an Oxford University research programme, so it became our hero and we were supposed to mourn.

The fool who killed Cecil is one Walter James Palmer, a dentist from the US, but our former colonial master couldnai??i??t be left out of the mourning entourage.

Africa Minister in the UK, Grant Shapps described the killing as an ai???appalling end to a wildlife iconai??? and called for governments on the continent to ai???end such barbaric huntingai???.

Wildlife icon? Cecil? Why kill our icon? We have to mourn this wildlife icon.

Dear reader, did you read Shappsai??i?? statement carefully? The blame is actually not on this Palmer idiot, the blame lies with the ai???governments on the continent who must ai???end such barbaric hunting.ai???

Not very nice words to another minister, but Minister Muchinguri all the same had to be seen to be doing something. She quickly called for a press conference, God knows where because the background during the press conference seemed like she was at the back of some abandoned house, and sounded like an angry minister.

She said Palmer should be extradited back to Zimbabwe to face the music. This Bishop almost collapsed with laughter. I know Minister Muchinguri wasnai??i??t joking because Zimbabwe and the US signed an extradition treaty which came into effect in 2000, but I couldnai??i??t stop laughing.

Palmer has even admitted to the crime, but I couldnai??i??t stop laughing. Poaching is illegal even in the US, but I couldnai??i??t stop laughing. Some petition is doing rounds around the world with environmentalists calling for the extradition of Palmer back to Zimbabwe, but I couldnai??i??t stop laughing.

Has the Bishop gone bonkers? No. You see, this Palmer guy is very wealthy and when one US professor was asked whether the extradition would happen he said ai???this is very lengthy and costly and Zimbabwe may not want to go through it.ai??? Case closed!

Cecil can be more equal than the over 15 million Zimbabweans, but that lion canai??i??t be more equal than a wealthy capitalist from big brother America.

Letai??i??s not get carried away with the current hullabaloo about Cecil. Letai??i??s not be over optimistic, if ever Palmer is to face the music for his sins, he will do so far away from our competent courts.

Bishop is out!var
