Todayai??i??s reading comes from the book of Joel.
Being a Bishop, I know that many of you were told at school that Joel and friends are ai???minorai??? prophets.
Being a Bishop, I also know that the immediate reaction is to classify these ai???minorai??? prophets ai??i?? all 12 of them ai??i?? on a rung or two below the

Isaiahs, Jeremiahs and Daniels.
A bit of elucidation is in order.

The Old Testament used to be known as the The Law and The Prophets due to the nature of its content and import.
Moses got the Law, and prophets were raised to deliver Godai??i??s judgment ai??i?? largely premised on warnings and promises spelt out in Deuteronomy and within the context of the Abrahamic promise – on how the children of Israel obeyed or disobeyed the Law.

All prophets are important, some are just prominent than others. J. Hampton Keathley III has a thing or two to say about that.
And so we get to Joel, the ai???minorai??? prophet. He is joined in such classification by the likes of Jonah, one of the Bishopai??i??s personal favourites.
Chapter 1 verse 1 identifies the author as Joel, meaning ai???Yahweh is Godai???, and the entire book can itself be reckoned as ai???The Day of Yahwehai???.

And then Joel 2:28 declares: ai???And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions.ai???

Old men dreaming dreams and young men seeing visions ai??i?? fantastical, hey?
One of the many fine qualities of the Good Book is how easily it moves seamlessly from the allegorical to the practical, to the historical, even.
And that brings me to a rather poignant remark a colleague made the other day as we discussed Walter Mzembiai??i??s almost utterly inconceivable 2034 dream.

She said: ai???Zimbabweans have lost the capacity to dream.ai???
I would go further and say that our young have also lost the ability to envision anything good.

Which reminds me of Paulo Coelho in ai???The Alchemistai???.
He said: ai???There is only one thing that makes a dream impossible to achieve: the fear of failure.ai???

While ai???The Alchemistai??? is Coelhoai??i??s most celebrated book, its prequel, ai???The Pilgrimageai???, is also a very engaging read ai??i?? as are most of his other books. (An admonishment from a man of the cloth: be careful of the esoteric and the arcane as you revel in Coelhoai??i??s mastery of the art of the written word.)

A passage in ai???The Pilgrimageai??? reads in part: ai???The first symptom of the process of our killing our dreams is the lack of time . . . Those who do nothing are always tired and pay no attention to the little amount of work they are required to do. They complain constantly that the day is too short. The truth is, they are afraid to fight the Good Fight.

ai???The second symptom of the death of our dreams lies in our certainties. Because we donai??i??t want to see life as a grand adventure, we begin to think of ourselves as wise and fair and correct in asking so little of lifeai??i??

ai???And, finally, the third symptom of the passing of our dreams is peace. Life becomes a Sunday afternoon; we ask for nothing grand, and we cease to demand anything more than we are willing to giveai??i??

ai???When we renounce our dreams and find peace, we go through a short period of tranquillity. But the dead dreams begin to rot within us and to infect our entire being. We become cruel to those around us, and then we begin to direct this cruelty against ourselves. Thatai??i??s when illnesses and psychoses arise. What we sought to avoid in combat ai??i?? disappointment and defeat ai??i?? come upon us because of our cowardice.

ai???And one day, the dead, spoiled dreams make it difficult to breathe, and we actually seek death. Itai??i??s death that frees us from our certainties, from our work, and from that terrible peace of our Sunday afternoons.ai???

Coelho could have been talking about Zimbabwe and Zimbabweans.
We have become a nation so deeply enmeshed in a collective sense of apathy, a political psychosis that stops us from dreaming dreams and seeing visions.

Our national dreams are killed because we ai???donai??i??t have the moneyai???, or there is ai???too little timeai???, or we would rather not dare.
We are cowards, we dare not dream. We are laggards, we dare not work to achieve our dreams.

Ok, the old men are dreaming dreams ai??i?? well, at least some of them.
Our old men, when they were young, envisioned an independent Zimbabwe. They actioned that and April 18, 1980 came.
As they got older, they envisioned land, empowerment and indigenisation. It is happening.

Today some are dreaming World Cup dreams. And our young men canai??i??t envision it.
This could be a problem going back into our history, though of course those inclined towards political histrionics and hyperbole will unimaginatively and dismissively say ai???itai??i??s Mugabeai??i??s faultai???.

With the exception of those amongst us who still pine for ai???cheapai??? Rhodesian beer, we were once united as a people by the common goal of defeating colonialism.

Beyond that, do we really have any founding values? Do we have a common dream for Zimbabwe? What is it that unites us?
Indeed, are we a nation or merely a country ai??i?? a geographical and biological accident?

They have a common dream. They are Americans and they know what they want.
What do we have as Zimbabweans, beyond bragging about having the best literacy rate in Africa?

We are a nation that cannot dream of tomorrow, that cannot envision a future.
Mzembiai??i??s World Cup idea, any other country would have thought, is a common dream ai??i?? something to work towards, something to unite us.
Instead we ring loud with lack of self-confidence. We are defeated long before we begin, if I may borrow from Charles Mungoshi.

Zimbabwe needs a common dream, something to drive us (at the very least in the medium term) in one direction that delivers development to the people.

It is common dreams that make nations out of countries. And a World Cup bid ai??i?? even if we lose out ai??i?? is one such dream.
Our old men are dreaming dreams, but our young men are blinded by pettiness to the point that they cannot see visions.
