BEING described as a decent volleyball player, who could raise his stock by having some upper body strengthened lit a fire under Anyway Mangwiro’s chair.

Support Unit had just performed dismally at the 2015 Zone XI championship and an inquest into the stinker made Mangwiro appreciate what he needed to do.

“After the Zone XI competition, we sat down as a team and told each other some hard truths.

“The coaches said I needed to work on my upper body because I was found wanting during crucial times,” said the power hitter.

“After that assessment, I decided to forgo the off-season and started working harder in the gym with special emphasis on improving my upper body strength.”

The 28-year-old returned from pre-season training feeling like a different player and has been the driving force behind Support Unit in the Harare Volleyball League.

The ZRP outfit went into week six leading the table with 30 points ahead of Harare City (21) and UZ (20), though both have three games in hand.

Mangwiro insists Support Unit do not have an eye on how their rivals are fairing and that the team is instead concentrating on handling its own business.

“Our destiny is in our hands and everyone knows what we need to do between now and the end of the season. We don’t want to maintain the form that has taken us to the top of the log, we want to improve it and everyone is putting in the hard yards,” he said.

The former United Fairbridge man believes he has become a better player since joining the Harare volleyball giants four years ago.

“I started playing for Support Unit in 2013, when I was transferred from Bulawayo, where I was playing for another Support Unit side, UFB.

“My game has improved and continues to improve,” said Mangwiro.
