TOP Amateur golfer David Amm has been named captain of the Zimbabwe team scheduled to take part in this week’s Region V Africa Golf Championships.

The tournament, slated for April 9-13 at Chapman Golf Club, will see Zimbabwe play host to some of the region’s top golfing nations.

Among them are perennial heavyweights South Africa, Namibia, Swaziland, Botswana, Uganda, Malawi and hosts Zimbabwe. Minister of Sports and Recreation Honourable Kazembe Kazembe is expected to grace tomorrow’s opening ceremony.

Team Zimbabwe has been in camp for three weeks now, and Team Zimbabwe coach Simon Murungweni is optimistic of a good outing.

“The team is ready for the tournament, and morale is high in the cam.

“Hopefully we will reap the rewards of all our hardwork and put up a good performance,” said Murungweni

Zimbabwe will be fielding two teams of four players each, to balance the number of teams participating after the withdrawal of Lesotho. Team A, led by David Amm, will feature Tafadzwa Nyamukondiwa, Tafara Mpofu and Thompson Masiya.

Amm just completed the Nomads Under-19 tournament in South Africa yesterday, while Nyamukondiwa is ranked as the second best amateur player in the country. Mpofu comes in as the dark horse as will be playing on home turf at Chapman Golf Club with Masiya rounding off the team.

The second team will comprise of Rashid Mohammed another Chapman Golf Club member, Promise Sumbureiro from Manicaland, Conrad Makoto and Tatenda Makunde both local golfers at Royal Harare and Wingate Golf Club respectively.

“With these two teams we are ready for the tournament, and hope to play well and win. “Zimbabwe has home advantage, playing at the Chapman course, which we are all well acquainted with.

“In terms of performance, on continent, Zimbabwe has always played second fiddle to South Africa, but we are gunning for the first place position this time around,” said Murungweni.

This is the second time Murungweni has been involved in the national team, having been in charge of the All-Africa Team Championships squad last year in Victoria Falls.
