Cde Chen Chimutengwende —
The death of former Cuba President Fidel Castro has robbed the world of a revolutionary and iconic leader. Cde Castro died on Friday evening and his body was expected to be cremated yesterday. The late leader was popular for defying the United States’ big brother tendencies and survived many assassination plots as a result of that.

In Cuba, Cde Castro is said to have “given Cuba to Cubans” and in Zimbabwe, he was regarded as a true revolutionary friend. Following his death, patron of the Zimbabwe-Cuba Friendship Association Cde Chen Chimutengwende said Cde Castro will forever be remembered for his hospitality to Zimbabweans.

Fidel Castro was a great leader, a revolutionary and a great friend of Africa and the downtrodden people of the world. He was certainly a global game-changer in world politics.

Cde Castro was a leader of a small country, but his contribution in the politics of this world was much greater for a leader of such a small country. He was even able to challenge a world power like United States of America which failed to do anything about him.

He was a highly respected cadre among the revolutionaries of the world. Cde Castro supported the African liberation struggle more than any other revolutionary in the world. That is the reason why the world is going to miss an iconic leader like him.

Cuba’s role in Angola was a game-changer in favour of the anti-imperialist forces of Angola. It was the same as Zimbabwe, Namibia and other countries fighting the liberation struggle.

It will certainly be very difficult for the world socialist movement to produce another revolutionary cadre like Castro. He will greatly be missed in the anti-imperialist world as a revolutionary as well as in the pan-Africanist world.

We as Zimbabweans have certainly lost a great ally whom we have travelled a great revolution with. Cuba has been heavily involved in supporting Zimbabwe materially. It provided diplomatic training for Zimbabwe’s freedom fighters.

In the education sector, he helped in the training of Zimbabwean students in Cuba and the establishment of Bindura University of Science Education (BUSE).

The people of Zimbabwe will always be grateful to Cde Fidel Castro and Cuba. I am sure our friendship with Cuba will continue to grow even if the legendary and iconic Cde Castro is gone.

Go well Cde Castro, you did your part and left a mark that can never be erased.

Cde Chen Chimutengwende is patron of the Zimbabwe-Cuba Friendship Association. He is also the interim chairman of the Zimbabwe-Cuba parliamentary committee.
