AFTER three years, the house that the Zimbabwe Music Awards (Zima) promised musician, Dickson Chingaira Makoni aka Cde Chinx, is ready to be occupied.

The roof, ceiling, tiles, plumbing, cabinet fittings, security wall, lawn and pavements are all in place. By Wednesday last week contractors were putting final touches in the two master bedrooms complete with en suite while the lawn was being tended to. Zima chairman, Joseph Nyadzayo, who is also a friend of Cde Chinx says the handover of the house is this Tuesday, however, there is one BIG problem. Cde Chinx is ill-disposed – battling cancer at a hospital in the capital – and Nyadzayo is clearly a troubled man.

Having invested US$30 000 of his personal money into the project and spent several man hours, supervising the project and going door-to-door begging for resources from well-wishers, Nyadzayo has one plea from God. “I have just one wish – to lead him (Cde Chinx) here,” said Nyadzayo during a tour of the Sentosa property.

“I want him to see what we have done, what Zimbabweans some of whom have never met him or interacted with him, have done. If all Zimbabweans; fans of Cde Chinx, music lovers and Zimbabweans as a whole join me in prayer for the speedy recovery of this man, I would be very grateful.”

The Zima chairman, who promised Cde Chinx a house, in a televised awards ceremony in 2014, said although, it had taken him three gruelling years to complete building it, he now more than ever feels desperate for Cde Chinx to finally live in his new home. Nyadzayo was speaking exclusively to this publication while overseeing the final touches to the house he built for Cde Chinx with the help of several well-wishers.

“I did not build the house, it was built by Zimbabweans, people who believe in what Cde Chinx and others have done for this country. To me and I believe several others, Cde Chinx is not a politician – he is a nation builder, a musician who has represented his fellow comrades in the music industry and this nation well,” said Nyadzayo.

He said a local furniture company has pledged beds for the four bedrooms while he is still to conclude talks with other individuals and companies that have offered to completely furnish the house, which has a trendy open plan kitchen setup. Nyadzayo said Zesa is supplying everything to do with ensuring that there is electricity in the house, as his dream to see Cde Chinx in the upmarket home finally comes to fruition.

At the entrance to the house, will be a life size metal sculpture of Cde Chinx holding a microphone and carrying what appears to be an AK 47 assault rifle disguised as a guitar, “the message being that the musician fought the war through his music”.

But, even as all things come together, with the hope that Cde Chinx makes it out of hospital to receive his expensive gift – Nyadzayo says the project was one of the most difficult undertakings he has ever had to do. “Begging for help is painful. Sometimes people say yes, when they actually mean no. Their words and body language speak different things. In the beginning I was excited, I thought it would be quick.

“However, I’m glad we have finally done it. Many people came on board. To some people I did not even have to explain myself, the moment I mentioned the name Chinx, they just asked what was needed. I will compile a list of everyone that helped and I will thank them from the bottom of my heart and on behalf of everyone who loves Cde Chinx, listens to his music and is happy to see him get this property.”

Nyadzayo, who has been visiting Cde Chinx in hospital since he was admitted, said sometimes the musician cannot even talk, especially after taking medication, but he is optimistic. “I have hope and I will not stop praying. I want this house to represent the joy we derive from Cde Chinx and his works.

This is an attempt to symbolise that joy. He is not a player of instrument but his voice, his words gave the masses and the fighters hope when it was easy to give up. “It is our turn to give him hope. To say, ‘comrade, you will live in this house we have built for you.  Let this house speak to you to say you have done well for your country’,” sad an almost teary Nyadzayo.

He continued with a message directed to Cde Chinx: “Whenever you are in this house, be happy, for your country is saying thank you. You did not sing alone but you represent many, some of whom lost their lives to the evil tactics of the enemy. You represent them. This is a house where there should be no strife, no quarrelling but just happiness and peace – a repayment of the smiles, the freedom and the peace that you helped bring to your fellow countrymen through music.”
