Investigations carried out by this publication revealed that local men are going to great lengths in their bid to up their sexual game.

There is a high demand for pills and herbs that have since been condemned by the Medicines Control Authority of Zimbabwe.

Some are finding “solace” in a powder that is commonly referred to as Congo dust.

As the name suggests, the powder originates from the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Distributors of the powder claim that Congo dust can prolong an erection for up to an hour if applied correctly.

“All will be quiet but when action time comes, ooh! You will see. For external use only. Honeymoon is good. No harm to diabetic or BP patients, use it, just take advantage. No side effects,” reads a notification on the powder’s packaging.

A pimp in the Harare Avenues area explained how the powder is used.

“You just take a pinch and rub it at the tip of your organ at least three hours before being intimate. You know it’s working when you start feeling some heat down there. When that happens you can have a session that lasts up to an hour before you ejaculate,” he said.

However, health experts have warned men against using the Congo dust.

They pointed out that the powder has got side effects that include cancer, headaches, dizziness, vasodilation of blood vessels, straining of veins, erectile dysfunction and high blood pressure among others.

“During the process of an erection, the male sexual organ enlarges and stiffens as a result of changes within muscles, nerves and blood vessels of the organ.

“Normally, an erection can last for two to seven minutes before ejaculation during a sexual act. However, if it stretches to an hour then obviously the blood vessels of the organ will be strained,” said a local medical practitioner, Dr Ignatius Nyabadza.

“Continuous use of such a substance has high risks of causing a man to fail to have a natural erection. This will force him to rely heavily on sexual enhancers.

“It is also possible for one to develop cardiovascular diseases or infections that are linked to the blood vessels if there is a prolonged use of such substances.”

National Cancer Alliance of Zimbabwe executive director Dr Nelson Ngwaru warned that the use of such herbs can also affect women.

“It is possible for the product to cause cervical cancer among female counterparts since the powder will be disposed inside a female reproductive trek.

“We have had several cases where women develop cervical cancer after inserting herbs into their private organs and as such we discourage women from allowing foreign substances into their reproductive treks,” he said.

The Diabetes Association of Zimbabwe (DAZ) highlights that the continued use of such substances can cause high blood pressure, diabetes and heart problems.

“Too much of anything on a human body obviously has negative side effects. The use of substances that quicken the flow of blood in the system eventually triggers chronic conditions such as BP and heart problems,” said Mr Ngoni Chigwana, the DAZ national chairman.

“The human heart is responsible for pumping blood into the system. When such substances are used, the heart is forced to supply more blood than usual to sustain the abnormal erection. lt means the muscles that support the heart may develop constant pains in the long run,” he explained.

However, men continue to ignore all the red flags and distributors of the sex enhancers say Congo dust is one of their fast selling products.

“I cannot disclose our source of the powder because they are smuggled into the country, but we sell them for between $1 and $1,50 per sachet and the demand is very high,” said one of the distributors who preferred anonymity.

“A sachet can be used for two or three times depending on the size of the organ.”

A 29-year-old Harare man, Tonderai Samaita, shared his experience with the product.

“I don’t have any problems with my erection but when I heard about the powder, curiosity pushed me into trying it,” he said.

“After applying the powder on my organ, I waited for about 30 minutes before my private organ started feeling itchy. That is when I indulged in the actual act.

“My organ was not only erect, it looked swollen. On that day I went for about 30 minutes without reaching a climax and my partner ended up complaining because she had reached orgasm twice and was tired.

“After the act, I experienced a severe headache and dizziness. I won’t be using that powder again.”
