The making of a Vektar

The Sunday Mail

HUNGWE (1)HE spends three and half hours in the gym, six days a week. Two and half hours of those are spent hammering the same body part. The other hour is dedicated to cardio exercises. Every set of his has two or three extra repetitions than the last one.

He eats seven meals inside 24 hours and takes a regular dosage of a variety of supplements. He looks mean.

Vektar Hungwe is he.

The 33-year old body-builder looks like a million dollars, walks like it and speaks like it.

“History will record that with what I have achieved there is no point competing in Zimbabwe,” he declares. “Basically from 2011 to 2013 I won everything that was on offer here in Zimbabwe. I beat guys who are fit to be inducted into the hall of fame. I have won most of the regional competitions. I have dominated. Basically to me I have reached a point whereby I bring back to Zimbabwe by hosting shows and promoting upcoming athletes.”

It’s out of stock here.

Last weekend Hungwe became the first Zimbabwean body-builder to earn a professional card after emerging the overall winner at the International Body-building and Fitness Federation (Africa) contest in South Africa. The pro card gives Hungwe automatic entry into most international body building competitions.

It’s no mean achievement.

It looks more impressive if read against the fact that here is a body-builder who is self funded, a body-builder who is in the sport by default and a body-builder who is very patriotic.

“It was by default to start pumping weights. I did play rugby but had a chronic knee injury and during rehab one Dr Charandura suggested that I start pumping weights. He said ‘listen you have a nice body, I will train you and give you advice. There is Mr Bulawayo coming up in a few weeks and I think you will be ready for that show.’

“That was in 2005 and I went on to win Mr Bulawayo. A few months later I came to Harare to compete in the Mr Zimbabwe contest. I didn’t get a placing in that competition. However, the way the guys from Harare went about business made me want to come to the capital and take up body-building professionally.

“The decision to take up body-building as a profession didn’t go down well with my wife because she knew me as a rugby player. However, the determination I had and the results that came my way turned her around, she is now my biggest fan,” said the former Gweru Sports Club and Matebeleland Busters scrumhalf.

Charlene Hungwe, the woman who gets to call Vektar her beau and has to deal with the envious looks of other women, disclosed that determination drives her man.

“This man is determined. He works hard and is always determined to win. As a wife I support whatever he decides and am always at his shows giving him maximum support.

“However, my support is just emotional. He has tried to get me into the gym but I think he is beginning to realise that I am not keen on sweating it all out. I am also not keen on dieting, he diets but I eat what I want. When he wins he celebrates by eating fast food. We celebrated his win in South Africa by having dinner at McDonalds . . . it was fun,” she said.

With a body like that your man should be in demand. Don’t you get insecure at times? “No, no his heart is mine. I am so, so secure.”

Meanwhile, Hungwe reveals that he won’t buy into the “you have outgrown Zimbabwe” gospel.

“Yes some individuals, especially in South Africa, argue that I am better off moving that side but that argument doesn’t fly with me. I look at myself as a Zimbabwean ambassador. When I go out there some people are surprised that a Zimbabwean body-builder can be this well shaped. They think we are starving here . . . yes things are difficult but they are not as bad as they are painted by some media houses,” he said.

In a top guy’s move Hungwe took to Facebook and dedicated his triumph to victims of Xenophobia. “With all the negativity surrounding the so-called rainbow nation(South Africa)with the xenophobia, my focus still remains unparalleled . . . I’m a very proud Zimbabwean and nothing the world can do to diminish our DNA-hardwork & peaceful nation will dedicate my victory to the millions of Zimbos & will donate 50% of my gate taking on IBFF Zim Classic to the affected people of xenophobia,” Hungwe posted.
