MINING: Zimplats to seek approval for retrenchments

The Sunday Mail

ZIMBABWE’s biggest platinum miner, Zimplats, which last week announced plans to cull more 25 senior managers, is yet to engage the Retrenchment Board with its plans.

The affected staffers account for about 10 percent of the workers in the supervisory and management levels.

Zimplats, which is listed to the Australian Stock Exchange), employs more than 5 000 workers.

“Notice has not yet been sent to the Retrenchment Board. At this stage the company has approached the affected staff and is currently in discussions before the notice is sent. The courts actually encourage employers and their employees to engage and seek agreements before using the formal routes.

“The number identified accounts for about 10 percent of the staff in the supervisory and management levels. The impact will be significant,” said Zimplats head of corporate affairs Ms Busi Chindove.

Platinum mining companies are being affected by falling commodity prices and the 15 percent export tax imposed on unprocessed platinum ore.
