VaShagare: Act on these irresponsible motor mouths

THE Premier Soccer League leadership has done well to bring some resemblance of professionalism to our game.

Twine Phiri and his crew are no angels but their track record speaks volumes of how well they have done under very difficult circumstances.

Long gone are the days when teams used to bypass designated entry points to scale perimeter fences under the comical belief that doing so would make them immune to the opposition’s juju.

The days of having a player’s name being written with a pen have also been forgotten as the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League gets better with each passing season.

Kenny Ndebele, the PSL chief executive, is a man who knows the game and has worked hard over the years.

However, there is an area where our top flight league seems to be sleeping on the wheel and this has to do with players and coaches who bring the game into disrepute by making irresponsible statements about referees, the PSL itself and to some extent the league sponsors.

Last year Moses “Bambo” Chunga got away with murder when he questioned Castle Lager’s marketing strategy.

Ok, its granted Chunga is not the smartest of them all but he must have been made to pay for his “Castle Lager are better off sponsoring local talent than Barcelona because we are the ones who drink their beer, Messi doesn’t drink Castle Lager” gibberish.

Ignorance, or dullness, is no defence.

The Chunga incident came and went just like that.

Nothing had happened.

Imagine something like that taking place in the Barclays English Premiership or the Absa Premiership just across the Limpopo?

They would have been an outcry and swift action.

Now how about Luke “Vahombe” Masomere’s post match interview after his How Mine outfit subdued Dongo Sawmill at Vhengere last Sunday?

“I want to give a big thank you to the referee (Jimmy Makwanda), he played a big part in our win with his bias. His bias invoked a spirit of fighting on the part of my players who fought like a wounded buffalo.

“The boys realised that all their efforts were being thwarted by the referee and instead of surrendering, they upped their game and I really want to convey my gratitude to that gentleman, however, I must warn him that if he continues doing that in favour of Dongo Sawmill, that team will be relegated this year,” Masomere was quoted as saying after the game.

If the above statements don’t warrant sanctioning then nothing else does!

The referee of the day Jimmy Makwanda was reported to be atrocious, making a series of questionable calls including signalling for a free kick when it should have been a penalty to How Mine.

However, Masomere should have found a way to put across his point without suggesting that there was an unholy alliance between Dongo Sawmill and the Chiredzi-based referee.

It has been a week now since Masomere reached premature oral ejaculation and nothing has been said by the PSL leadership.

The top flight league needs to act on such reckless statements before disaster strikes.

Who gives these players Bronco?

Zimbabwean football players have also caught up with the self destructing habit of abusing cough mixtures.

My desire to track the whereabouts of a striker who was touted as the next big thing led me into a dark underworld that is claiming the careers of many players.

The boy proved to be a hit during his one year loan move to Shabanie Mine but his return to the parent club coincided with a serious slump in form.

Initially, the coach was blamed for freezing the boy out but investigations showed that the lad can no longer run three laps before coughing and gasping for breath.

It turns out NM is not alone in the druggies club with that over-hyped and overweight former Bosso player also being mentioned during VaShagare’s investigations.

At Dynamos, the defender who hangs out with the ever misbehaving dancehall bee father is also said to be in the habit of “kushama.”

Apart of acting as a trade union for players the Footballers Union of Zimbabwe needs to teach our players about the dangers of abusing drugs.

Former players like Kelvin “Captain Chicha” Mushangazhike would come in handy in such programmes because their careers imploded under the weight of drug abuse.

Thankfully Captain Chicha is now on the straight and narrow and his life story should be a wakeup call to boys dzekushama.

VaShagare exits the scene.
