VaShagare: Dube is going, who cleans the mess? Cuthbert Dube

The Sunday Mail

SOMEONE will have to clean the mess that Cuthbert Dube has brought into 53 Livingstone Avenue and Zimbabwean football at large.

It’s astounding that one man, with the aid of a clownish chief executive who answers to the name Jonathan Mashingaidze, can be a source of such football anguish.

Cuthbert Dube must be the most unpopular man in Zimbabwe at the moment.

The majority of us — save for a few gullible souls, among them journalists — are agreed that Dube is the worst thing ever to happen to Zimbabwean football.

Yes, yes VaShagare is aware of the Asiagate scandal but this Dube charade is worse off in my book.

Now as our slide into the football abyss continues without any meaningful action from the zifa board, zifa council, Sports and Recreation Commission and the out of touch Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture Andrew Langa, some of us are already thinking of men and women who can take us out of this mess.

VaShagare has his eye on the post Dube era!

That old man will not be the zifa boss for long and we need to plan for life after him.

How do I know that Dube will not be in that post for long?

Well I am neither Makandiwa nor Magaya but when it comes to football I have my finger on the pulse always.

The end is nigh for Cuthbert and the best thing he can do is jump before he is pushed.

Now when Dube goes, as he will, zifa will need sharp football brains to clean the mess that the shamed Samaita and his bootlicker Mashingaidze have brought into our game.

Some former players have been arguing that local football needs men and women who have played the game before.

It’s a valid argument.

If you look around the globe you see Platini, Bwalya and Figo all strongly involved in football administration.

Having former players taking the leap into the boardroom seems to be the in thing.

However, we need to be honest my fellow Zimbabweans, comrades, friends, ladies and gentlemen.

If you are asked to nominate a former player to take over from Dube who will that be?

It appears all our former players believe that their next port after hanging their boots is the coaching bench hence very few can claim to have the brains and skill needed to run a strategic organisation such as zifa.

The likes of Memory Mucherahohwa, George Mbwando, Zenzo Moyo, etc can cry foul from wherever they are but close analysis reveals that they are far away from the action.

How can a constituency that cannot even organise itself offer us a solution to our problems?

Making noise on Facebook and Twitter doesn’t make you a leader, being on the ground pushing for the change you desire does.

Sadly very few of our former players are in the thick of things.

However, there are some individuals like Peter Ndlovu, Desmond Maringwa and Norman Mapeza who appear to have it within them to lead us.

Ndlovu has the charisma, Maringwa has done wonders with the Footballers Union of Zimbabwe and Mapeza, despite some considerable success as a coach, is a man who looks better suited for the office.

Wasn’t it Obvious Ovidy Karuru?

Our boys have always done well across the Limpopo.

It’s heartening to see the likes of Willard Katsande, Khumbulani Banda, Khama Billiat, Cuthbert Malajila, Milton Ncube, Tendai Ndoro, Kingstone Nkatha and the former Dynamos trio of Denver Mukamba, Partson Jaure and Washington Arubi doing the business for their respective teams.

However, the absence of one Obvious Ovidy Karuru from the list of Zimbabweans who are setting the Absa Premiership alight confirms what we have always known about his decision to leave Europe for Kaizer Chiefs.

Karuru has seen little action at Kaizer Chiefs and the sight of him seating in the stands alongside close friend Jimmy Jambo during the Soweto Derby a fortnight ago spelt out his plight.

Ovidy is way better than most Amakhosi players; it’s the Super Diski culture that appears to be dragging him backwards.

The former Masvingo United and Gunners man needs to seriously think about his career when the South African season ends in May.

VaShagare exits the scene.
