Medical tourism company MedTours Africa last week officially rolled out its products to the market.

Medical tourism refers to travelling to another country for healthcare that is ordinarily unavailable at home.

Zimbabweans largely seek specialised medical treatment in South Africa and India as brain drain and lack of equipment locally – sparked by a sanctions-poisoned environment – has taken a toll on the availability and pricing of health services in Zimbabwe.

MedTours Africa provides one-stop-shop medical travel services and logistics for medical tourists.

On the local market, medical tourism, which is a direct result of the globalisation of healthcare, is a fledgling industry.

MedTours Africa executive director Ms Cheurombo Pswarayi said: “Our core objective is to lessen the burden on care-givers by giving them the much-needed assistance of taking care of all travel and medical treatment logistics for their loved ones.

“This will afford them the much-needed time and space to be with their loved ones without having to worry about the technicalities of getting from point A to point B to get them the medical attention they require.

“Once they appoint us their medical tourism facilitators, we will take over all the planning and execution of travel logistics allowing them the freedom and space to focus on getting themselves or their loved ones better.”

MedTours is partnering the internationally acclaimed Satguru Partap Singh Apollo (SPS Apollo) Hospital in Punjab, India. The state-of-the-art 350-bed hospital says it has the most eminent panel of medical professionals, many of them leaders in their fields. SPS Apollo Hospital representative Mr Atul Bahl said: “As a world class facility, we promise to offer affordable quality treatment to all classes of people. Over the years, we have started new medical programmes and are in the process of setting up a full-fledged oncology centre to offer affordable treatment for all kinds of cancers.”

Medical tourism is rapidly expanding, generating US$10,5 billion globally in 2012 and expected to grow at a compound annual rate of 17,9 percent from 2013 to 2019 to reach US$32,5 billion.
