The Josiah Magama Tongogara Legacy Foundation was established in memory of the late African freedom fighter, General JM Tongogara, the commander of the military campaign for the liberation of Zimbabwe, who is revered as a National Hero.

The Foundation is registered as a not-for-profit organisation (2007), with the objective of promoting the values he cherished, especially working with youth for education and leadership development.

The Foundation supports disadvantaged students with good academic grades for leadership development by sponsoring tuition assistance and scholarships, and promotes developmental and entrepreneurial activities that strengthen economic empowerment, among other activities.

The Foundation was established by Mrs Angeline Kumbirai Tongogara and has a board of trustees comprising mainly of people who worked with the late general during the liberation war, including senior members of the party, Government and defence forces.

The Patron is Vice-President Emmerson Mnangagwa.

The Foundation holds an annual commemoration on 26 December organised jointly with the Zimbabwe Defence Forces, and the commemoration to mark the 35th anniversary of his death will be held on January 28.

Among the invited speakers are war colleagues who will speak about the “Life of a Legend”, the Chinese Ambassador, HE Lin Lin, who will speak about his training in China at the Nanjing Military Academy, and Minister Oppah Muchinguri, who will speak about his “Last Journey”.

The JMTL Foundation appeals for support, contributions and donations in cash or kind to help to fulfil its aims and objectives, to honour the life of the late General Tongogara and his contribution to the liberation of Zimbabwe.
