2301-2-1-MPILO2Holiday Inn Bulawayo embarked on a refurbishment of the Mpilo Hospital B6 ward between 2013 and 2014 as part of the Group’s Corporate Social Investment programme. The ward had been closed for years as it had deteriorated beyond habitation. After assessing the plight of the hospital Holiday Inn Bulawayo took it upon itself to ensure that the ward is restored back to use. This involved the supply of materials and labour.

Scope of work covered in the refurbishment of the Hospital ward includes:

Stripping off old wooden tiles and re-tiling the ward with ceramic tiles including 2 sisters’ side offices

Scrapping off old painting on the walls and repainting of the ward including the offices and Kitchenette area

Re-enamel the bathrooms, sluice room, shower cubicle and toilets

Changed all the shower heads and accessories

Installed a DSTV decoder and television with 12 months DSTV viewing

Replaced the curtaining and rails for the ward

Replaced all broken windows

Spray painted the beds, and side cupboards

Replaced the entrance glass door and frame

Changed the lampshades

Fixed all the lights, plugs and all electrical fittings around the ward

Holiday Inn Bulawayo also donated all linen for the ward including sheets, pillowcases, bath towels, bath mats, blankets and gowns. The Mpilo Hospital has since converted the B6 ward into a private ward so as to allow the generation of revenue to assist with the Hospital upkeep.

Holiday Inn Bulawayo will continue to provide maintenance support for the ward to ensure that the same standards are maintained. The official handover of the refurbished ward was officiated by the African Sun Group Chief Executive, Dr Shingi Munyeza on the 7th of February 2014 at Mpilo Hospital.

2. SOS Children’s Village, Waterfalls Refurbishment

African Sun continues to invest back into communities in which we operate to improve the livelihoods of the communities. In 2014, African Sun’s Holiday Inn Harare refurbished 7 houses for SOS Children’s Village in Waterfalls, Harare.

The scope of work included pumping, repainting and repairs to ensure that the families for the Children’s Village have more comfortable homes. Under the same partnership with SOS Zimbabwe, Crowne Plaza Monomotapa also adopted SOS Children’s Village in Bindura where similar work is going to be carried out in 2015.

3. Mosio-a-Tunya High School Refurbishment

The Victoria Falls Hotel carried out a soft refurbishment of part of the Mosi-a-Tunya High School to improve the school’s facilities and create an enabling environment for the students and staff.

The hotel painted 6 classroom blocks and installed split unit air-conditioners in the school’s computer room and is currently building 10 studying tables and seats around the school. These will assist students to study within the school environment thus creating a conducive environment for students. All the refurbishment work was carried out by the Victoria Falls Hotel employees.
